Illumination for schools in Maasai Land Arusha, Tanzania
The Maasai are the Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and Northern Tanzania. They are among the best known of African ethnic groups, due to their distinctive customs and dress and residence near the national parks of East Africa. Currently Maasai who traditionally did not like to send their children to schools have realized the importance of education and encourage their children to study.
Realizing this fact, the National Tsing Hua Univeristy (NTHU) volunteer team founded and led by Fr.Jean Pascal Lombart CSSp since 2008, has helped to donate computers for Tanzania schools including some in Maasai land Arusha. The main challenge against this project is the unavailability of grid electricity is some schools, especially in Arusha.
This year the NTHU volunteer team in collaboration with OPTI-Solar Taiwan facilitated the installation of SP600 Junior inverter systems. The complete off-grid solar system like the one installed in Oldonyo Leng’ai secondary school in Tanzania includes two solar panels and a battery pack. The system can be used for DC and AC output, it can support 2-3 computers at a time. It can also be used for powering the luminaries.
The OPTI-Solar CEO Mr. Jones Wu pointed out that his company is ready to collaborate with NTHU International Volunteers for their future projects in Tanzania.
“Our NTHU team really appreciates the technical assistance provided by OPTI-Solar. SP Junior series play important part in this year project. By the experience of this year, cooperation with OPTI-Solar is undoubtedly beneficial to the following solar system project. We do recommend that SP Junior series are used in schools and homes for ordinary people in East Africa”, said the assistant leader Chunching Li.
In his speech after the installation process the headmaster of Oldonyo Leng’ai secondary school emphasized that he was happy to receive this donation from the NTHU team, so now the students will have access to computer technology and can use the lights to carry out their night private studies at school.
